Background of the Study
Work-life balance has emerged as a critical factor in determining mental health and overall well-being, particularly among civil servants who face significant job-related stressors. In Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, civil servants are often burdened with demanding work schedules, administrative pressures, and limited personal time, all of which can adversely affect their mental health (Adebayo, 2023). Recent studies highlight that poor work-life balance is associated with increased stress, burnout, and diminished psychological well-being (Olusegun, 2024). Conversely, maintaining a healthy balance between professional obligations and personal life has been linked to improved mental health outcomes and enhanced job satisfaction (Ibrahim, 2025). This study investigates the effect of work-life balance on the mental health of civil servants, exploring factors that contribute to stress and resilience. It also examines how organizational policies and personal coping strategies interact to influence mental health outcomes, thereby providing insights into effective interventions for promoting psychological well-being among civil servants (Oluwatoyin, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Civil servants in Akure South face considerable challenges in achieving an optimal work-life balance, leading to adverse mental health outcomes such as stress and burnout (Ogunleye, 2024). Despite recognition of these challenges, there is limited empirical research on how work-life balance affects mental health within this specific group. The lack of targeted studies creates difficulties in developing effective organizational policies and personal coping strategies to mitigate these issues. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the relationship between work-life balance and mental health among civil servants, thereby informing interventions that promote well-being (Okafor, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the level of work-life balance among civil servants.
To examine the impact of work-life balance on mental health.
To recommend interventions that improve work-life balance and mental health outcomes.
Research Questions:
What is the current state of work-life balance among civil servants in Akure South?
How does work-life balance affect mental health outcomes?
What strategies can improve work-life balance among civil servants?
Research Hypotheses:
Poor work-life balance is associated with increased mental health issues.
Civil servants with better work-life balance report lower stress levels.
Organizational interventions can significantly improve work-life balance and mental health.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical relationship between work-life balance and mental health among civil servants, offering insights for improving organizational policies and personal well-being. The findings will be beneficial for policymakers, human resource managers, and mental health practitioners in promoting a healthier work environment in Akure South (Akinyemi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the effect of work-life balance on mental health among civil servants in Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, and does not extend to other occupational groups or regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Work-Life Balance: The equilibrium between professional responsibilities and personal life.
Mental Health: The psychological and emotional well-being of an individual.
